Market Recipe: Yellow Tarka Dal

1/2 cup yellow moong dal and 1/2 cup of masoor dal (split orange lentil)
1 onion, finely chopped
1 tomato, finely chopped
2 green chilies, chopped
1/2 teaspoon ginger, finely chopped
1 /2 teaspoon garlic, finely chopped
3 pods of garlic
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
1 teaspoon red chilli powder
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
1 teaspoon kasuri methi (fenugreek leaves), crushed
1 tablespoon cooking oil
2 tablespoon fresh cilantro leaves, finely chopped
Salt to taste

 
1. Rinse dal and soak it for 10 minutes.
2. Transfer the dal in a pot and add 3 cups of water, salt to taste and 1/2 teaspoon turmeric and garlic pods.
3. Cook the dal for 30 mins stirring it in intervals till the dal is soft .
4. Finely chop ginger, garlic, onion, tomatoes and green chillies.
5. Heat oil in a pan add ginger and garlic. Sauté for 2 minutes and then add onions.
6. Once golden brown in color, add tomatoes, cumin seeds, red chili powder and coriander powder.
7. Pour the dal in the pan, add green chillies and fenugreek powder.
8. Garnish with finely chopped fresh cilantro.
